Excavation

Posted By Steve on July 2, 2009

Today we started actual excavation. Craig first took a few pictures of each of the excavation units. We then manhandled some of the larger pieces of debris that were obviously not in original context, including a large board and section of rail. Then to work excavating Unit 1. This unit contained the majority of a planer and grind wheel. Mostly we tried to scrape down to the original flooring as much as possible, though a lot has decomposed or been torn up so much as to be hardly recognizable.  A lot of metal artifacts were found including a large wrench, pic-axe head, and a lot of nuts, bolts, nails and miscellaneous stuff. Most things are not being brought back to the lab, but only piled up by excavation unit just for the sake of having some sort of method. The pic-axe head and wrench were deemed significant enough to actually tag and bring to the lab though. I also met James, the final member (well I think I’m actually the final member, but James is who I met last) of our team. After 4 hours of work, we had pretty much finished excavating Unit 1 and called it a day.
